Nestled in the heart of Durham at 3742 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd, Mayflower XVI Seafood Restaurant stands as a steadfast beacon for seafood lovers seeking both tradition and quality. This venerable establishment offers a rich selection of broiled and fried seafood dishes-each plate crafted to highlight the natural flavors from the Atlantic bounty. From broiled shrimp scampi and tender salmon steaks to crispy fried oysters and flounder, every bite speaks to a heritage of careful preparation and fresh ingredients that longtime patrons cherish.
The menu reveals clear dedication to simplicity and excellence. Whether you favor broiled trout or a classic fried platter laden with jumbo shrimp and scallops, the flavors arrive well-balanced and robust, never masked by heavy sauces. The presence of grilled chicken and steak options broadens the appeal, though it is the seafood-the essence of Mayflower XVI-that truly excites the palate. The boiled salmon, in particular, deserves special mention for its tender, succulent quality that has converted even fried seafood enthusiasts.
What resonates most about Mayflower XVI is its warm, lived-in atmosphere, reflecting decades of loyal customer stories and memories. While the decor leans towards the dated, this only deepens its charm, evoking a sense of nostalgia-a place where families grow and meals anchor special moments. Service here matches the kitchen’s quality, attentive without being intrusive, reinforcing a comforting, welcoming vibe.
Mayflower XVI is more than a seafood restaurant; it’s a culinary tradition in Durham. Mayflower is always a wonderful time and food is always top notch. Love coming here. Have been coming since before I had kids, now they have watched my kids grow.

In our of my late mother, I wanted to visit one of her favorite places. I’ve heard Mayflower quality has become very poor. As I haven’t been in over 7 years, I was pleased with how fresh the food was. Waiting staff was very attentive. The place is very dated but overall, I would return again.

Really delicious fried sea food. This place offers a great menu of food items which are fried or boiled. Shrimp, flounder, trout, oyster, and more. Be aware that even though you can find steak or chicken in its menu, the specialty of this restaurant is fried or boiled seafood. If it is what you are looking for, go ahead, if not I highly recommend go other place. My rate is based on what I ate and my experience. I like the food and it looks good but, I will suggest more like because it feel dark inside. I will give you a five star but, I think it is time to redecorate the place. Modernist will be great without loosing the essence.

I’ve been a Mayflowers customer for years!! I typically order fried flounder and shrimp but a friend suggested I try their boiled salmon and it was delicious!!! I’m hooked on this dish at least for the remainder of the year. Also this post is long overdue the service is excellent! The food is reasonably priced and delicious!! Oh I also ask for my fish to be salt and peppered fried. Ummm ummm good.

We haven't been here in many, many years, so I read through some reviews, and we decided to give it a shot for lunch on Saturday. We were pleasantly surprised in all respects! The service was excellent! Very friendly waiter who was very attentive and made sure our drinks were filled and got anything else we might need. The food was delicious! Everything was lightly fried to perfection. My spouse had fried scallops that she said were perfect with fries. I had the white fish and clam strips with a baked potato. The fish was so flakey, and so many of the clam strips were much bigger than I've seen in years, plus no rubbery texture. Both entrees came with slaw. We both had leftovers. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated with a nautical theme throughout, including an actual boat serving as the desk where you pay when leaving. We were thrilled to find the Mayflower serving up such great seafood and plan on returning sooner rather than later. Honestly, I'm surprised there wasn't a line out the door!
